Welcome to the UK Parkinson's Disease Society Tissue Bank Virtual Tour
The next few pages contain a more in depth guide to what's involved in the day to day operation of the Tissue Bank, with pictures of its facilities and equipment.
The aim of the PDS Tissue Bank at Imperial College London is to provide human brain and spinal cord tissue to scientists researching causes of and treatments for Parkinson's disease and related disorders. We recruit prospective donors both with and without PD. Upon the death of one of our registered donors, we make arrangements to retrieve the tissue and bring it back to the tissue bank for processing and storage. Scientists request tissue from us for research. Upon approval of such a request, we send the required tissue out to the researcher. Relevant case information (anonymised medical history and neuropathological diagnosis, for example) is made available to them at this time.
The Tissue Bank also aims to raise public awareness of Parkinson's disease and the work we do here.
The tour is divided into two main sections: "Office" and "Laboratory". The former deals with the administrative side of things, while the latter covers the actual mechanics of the tissue processing, etc. |
